Building a Home Network - Abstract

When building a network for home or small business use, there are many decisions which must be carefully weighed. Among these is the physical wiring or network topology and medium, the network hardware or protocol, and the software required to utilize the network. Additionally, a basic understanding of how to connect and configure it to enable the network to function is required.

There are some common threads of consideration that should be woven throughout the network decisions. These are planned use, future compatibility and upgradeability, and budgetary constraints. This paper will examine which topology, medium, protocol, and software should be utilized to build an effective home or small business network.
