There were several guidelines utilized in building the table of Network Hardware Prices found on Page 1. Only vendors who listed at least two network hubs were included on the chart. There are dozens of other advertisers in the magazine who only sell network cards or listed a single network hub. The included vendors are listed in the order they were found in the magazine. This is important because the smaller vendors tend to advertise toward the back of the magazine.

The actual hardware listed was also filtered. If a piece of hardware was only listed by a single vendor, then it was placed the generic section. Because of this consolidation, some of the generic equipment is actually a name brand, but most was the vendor's own brand of equipment. Also, hubs over one thousand dollars, hubs of 10mbps with more than 16 ports or 100mbps with more than 8 ports were not listed in the table. In some cases, the network cards and hubs in a category may not be the exact model. Many vendors list only the attributes of the item, not the actual model numbers.
